Ashlee's Memorial

Ashlee's Memorial Shadow Box
Jodie's kitty, Ashlee, died in September. It was a very sad time for our family. We decided to create this shadow box as a memorial to him. It contains several photos from various stages of his life, some of his fur, his collar and tag, and some toys he liked to play with.

This is the first shadow box I've ever put together. I mounted some of the photos on various thicknesses of foam core so that they stand in the box at different levels.

The collar and fur are mounted on some scrapbook paper that looks like watercolor. The same paper was used to cut out the letters of his name.

All the pieces are held in place with velcro dots and strips.

On that back of the box is a paper on which, Jodie and I wrote a few paragraphs about the kitty we loved:

Ashlee was a part of our family from July 13, 2002 until September 12, 2006. When he came to us, he was about the size and color of a rat.

He was a very fun kitty. He loved to run and play. He loved to chase us up the stairs. He teased us by flicking his tail to get our attention. He could even fly! Ashlee could zip across the living room, jump from the seat of the couch to the back of the couch, then soared to the dining room table.

When he was hungry, he'd be sure to come find us and yowl until we fed him. When he was happy, he had a quiet, raspy purr that made him sound like an asthmatic kitty.

Ashlee and Jodie were the best of friends. When she needed comfort, Ashlee would snuggle with her - until he could get away! He slept on the end of Jodie's bed each night. He'd swipe at the plastic liner of the trash can every morning to wake Jodie up.

Little Ashlee only got to be a teenager before he passed away. We think he ate a bug that didn't agree with him, and it made him very sick ... his liver failed.

This shadow memory box was made by Julie and Margaret for Jodie as a way to help ease her pain.

We will love Ashlee always, and miss him forever.
