This was the first time I'd done any canvaswork. Because I was new to it, I decided to keep costs low. Instead of stitching with the specialty fibers suggested, I decided to stitch with one shade of cotton floss and one shade of rayon fiber for each octagon. I chose my colors by matching my floss to the hues on my bedroom comforter. I tried to get one blue or green shade and one pink or purple shade for each octagon. The center octagon is pink silk and silver stranded metallic (#5 perle coton size). There is also a braid in there that ads some sparkle. This image is too small to do this piece justice, so I've added a link to a larger image so that you can see all the intricate stitch detail. Though the chart shows his piece hanging square, I'll be hanging it on point, like a diamond. I'm considering stitching this piece again, but only using two or three different fibers. I'm guessing that if your eye is not distracted by all the color, the individual stitches will be even more apparent. That could make for a very interesting effect. If you'd like to learn more about stitching with specialty fibers, read my Needlework 101 page entitled Metallics, Blending Filament and Rayon. If you'd like to learn more about working with silk, read my Needlework 101 page entitled Silk Fibers.
