Celestial Ornament

sun
My sister Janet celebrates the Winter Solstice during the December holiday season. She looks forward every year to the day marking the coming of more sunlight, which can lead us out of the winter blues. So for her gift, I stitched this shiney sun.

This design is charted for plastic canvas, but I used some aida from my stash. And though the chart also calls for cotton floss and #8 Kreinik braid, I didn't have any on hand. So into my stash I dug again and found some new DMC Rayon and stranded metallics. This ornament really glows in the lights of the tree.

I finished the ornament simply, like a little fringed pillow. The fringe is sorta funny looking since it's a round ornament on aida. The block weave of aida caused the ornament to fringe unevenly. I added some gold metallic cord as a hanger.

If you'd like to learn more about stitching with specialty fibers, read my page in Needlework 101 called Metallics, Blending Filament and Rayon.
