A Baby's Lock of Hair

A Baby's Lock of Hair
This is the only birth sampler I've stitched for any of my kids. I made it for Jodie (her real name is Joanne). The sentiment is very nice.

I've included some close-up shots of the completed piece so that you can see how the baby's lock of hair is sewn onto the top of the chart, and how the name and date appear, stitched at the bottom. The verse reads:

Nothing more precious to keep
In tones of a hue so deep
As soft as a silent prayer
A lock of my baby's hair
I catch it before it lands
And save each shiny strand
Remembrance of one more step
Of my baby's growing up
Within this poem it will be
And placed for all to see

A Baby's Lock of Hair

This piece was my very first official UFO (UnFinished Object). I started it in October of 1995, I believe. I really got bogged down in the backstitching. ARRRRGH!! Each bit of baby's breath on the chart was basically a cross stitch surrounded by a four-sided stitch. It seemed to take forever to get this chart completed!

In addition, the spacing on the chart within the words was off in a few of the lines. That made it hard for me to get things lined up correctly. It didn't help that I changed the color of the words to a deep pink from the chart's original green. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but on the finished piece, all that "red" is a little hard on the eyes.

A Baby's Lock of Hair

I know that I won't ever want to stitch this piece again ... anyone want to buy a nice used chart?
