Passionately Purple Heart

Here's the second heart block I stitched for charity this year. I'm thrilled with the way it came out.

I started this heart using a free pattern I found online. I began using the colors the designer recommended. As I stitched, I decided to change things up a bit.

I decided that there were too many shades of purple. For one thing, I didn't want to have to change the thread in my needle that often. But more than that, I wanted the colors to pop a bit more visually. So I made the centers of the large diamond orange.

I also decided to leave the spaces between all the diamonds bare, so the white fabric shows through. That's different from the original pattern, too.

Figuring out how to compensate the pattern to conform to the edges of the heart was a bit tricky in some places. Tricky meaning ... I had to count accurately! Ah, yes. A necessary evil when one is stitching a geometric pattern!
