Wedding Card

This is an example of a new-to-me technique I wanted to try this year, embroidery on paper. It's one of my PILLs for this year (Project In Long Lines).

It's really more like embroidery on card stock, because you need to use a paper that is thick enough to hold it's shape and not get squished or deformed by the tension of stitches.

This particular card happens to be from a kit. With the kit, the design is pre-printed on the cards. I then used a special pricking tool and foam pad to make the holes in the card stock.

After the holes were made, I then embroidered from hole to hole to create the design. It's a lot like the string art I used to do as a kid. Only then, the string was stretched around pegs in a board instead of through holes in card stock.

This second image show some of the detail of the design. Here you can easily see the small holes I created in the card stock.

I also have a book of embroidery on paper designs. In that case, I copy the design onto scrap paper. Temporarily attach the scratch paper to the card stock, then prick the design through both layers to create the holes used to embroider. I'll have a finished design from the book posted in the near future.

If you don't have the pricking tool and foam, you can also use a needle to prick the holes and a stack of corrugated cardboard to protect your work surface.

I really like the designs in the kit, but the instructions are pretty sketchy.
