I've decided to dub 2004 "The Year of Small Projects" in cross-stitch. I seem to be gravitating toward pretty little pieces that can be stitched in a matter of a few hours/days. It's so nice to see a project go from start to finish in a short time!

As I was sorting through my stash to gather charts I no longer needed so I could sell them in Cameo's Clutter, I found this pretty border pattern. I am selling the chart, but stitching this one border first!

I decided to make the design into a bookmark for a birthday gift for one of the ladies in my quilt group. Once again, I chose a piece of ribband with a scalloped edge as the ground cloth. When I finished the body of the stitching, I added a row of nun's stitch at each end of the bookmark.

This time, instead of using floss for the nun's stitch, I unraveled the edge of the fabric where I'd planned to fringe the bookmark, and used the fiber from the base fabric to form the nun's stitch. This way, the stitching disappears into the ground fabric because it's all made of the same fiber. Finally, I gave the bookmark some nice long fringe.

If you'd like to learn how to make the Nun's Stitch, read the page in Needlework 101 called Nun's Stitch.
