July Birthday Faerie | ||||||||||||||

* Jeanne's November Birthday Faerie * Julie's September Birthday Faerie Though I started this piece last summer, this third faerie didn't hold my interest. I'm not sure if I was just in a cross-stitch funk, or if I was just tired of this particular piece. I think it was the former because I found myself taking up crochet, decorating and craft projects in the intervening months. Once I got back to stitching, I completed the piece in just two weeks of sporadic stitching. I did change a couple things on the chart. The blue backstitching in the dress and flag was charted to be stitched with the darkest shade of blue. But in looking at the color photo in the chart, I thought it was too dark and stood out too much. I chose to backstitch all the blue in the medium shade of blue and am quite happy with the results. The other change my daughter and I decided on was to do no backstitching on the border. Again, the dark shade of blue just seemed to stand out too much around the flowers. But we thought that by leaving the border with no backstitching, it helped the border recede into the background and allowed the faerie to take center stage. Though it doesn't show up well in this image, the wings are worked with both floss and blending filament. Instead of using both fibers in the needle at the same time, I decided to stitch the wings in layers. First I stitched all the colored floss. Then I stitched an X over the floss with the blending filament. If you'd like to learn more about how to use specialty fibers, read my Needlework 101 page called Metallics, Blending Filament and Rayon. I also did not use the beads called for in the chart because they were not readily available. Instead, I used some beads I found in a tube in a craft section of a discount store. If you'd like to learn more about how to use beads in stitchery, read my Needlework 101 page called Beading Tips.
