Twill

Twill by Ronda Jean
I hadn't done a good-sized stitching project in a while, and needed something special to get me jump-started again. So I dug through my pattern stash to look for a piece I could do just for me — one that would make my heart sing. I came up with this little sewing elf, Twill.

Ronda Jean describes Twill this way:

"Have you ever wondered where all those lost needles go? Well ... let me introduce you to "Twill" — the guardian fairy of lost needles. Making his home in or very near your favorite cross stitch place, Twill gathers needles of every size for his collection. If you're quick you might see his twinkle of light as he goes about his rounds."

This chart calls for 25ct Cherub Pink Jobelan for the ground fabric. Well, I didn't have any. So I used this piece of 25ct blue Lugana from my stash. My Twill is cute, but not as cute as the model. I think the blue fabric brings out a funny cast on the little elf.

The chart also calls for some specialty fibers. My local needlework shop didn't have the colors I needed in stock, so I just went to my stash and chose other colors. Here are my substitutions:

Chart
Substitution
Used On
Needle Necessities 193 DMC 915 & DMC 718
Blended Needle
Twill's Clothes
Pizzaz #10 Royal Blue Rayon Ribbon
142F-22
Threaded Needle & Spool
Ultra Sprinkles #12 Purple DMC 5289
Royal Purple Stranded Metallic
Magical Twinkles & Tassel

Twill's blended needle clothes *almost* work. The original chart called for an overdyed floss and the variation of color is very cute. But mine will do.

The chart also calls for other specialty threads that I did have, including Kreinik blending filament to make Twill's wings sparkle and DMC Gold #282 (lovingly referred to as barbed wire on a spool) which is used to outline the wings. The pretty blue button came from my grandmother's button collection. And I made the small tassel for the tip of his cap. The chart uses a charm in that spot. I actually like my baby tassel even better.

I framed Twill in a simple gold frame with a maroon mat. I added a touch of batting between the stitching and the foam core.

Now that Twill is framed, I'll be hanging him in my newly-formed "gallery" in the hallway that leads to my basement studio. Let's hope he doesn't swipe all my needles! If he does, I'll never get anything accomplished!
