Dololly and Star DeTailer

My Favorite Dololly

Note from Cameo:  This article was first written in 1996 shortly after the Dololly first appeared on the market. Since that time, the creator of the Dololly died on the way to a needlework gathering. A few years after her death, the company was restarted and some Dolollys are again available, though there are different models now.

Those interested in obtaining an original Dololly might keep an eye on the auction websites, such as eBay to see if this nifty little tool is ever available for sale.

The Star De-tailer, however, is still in production at the time of this writing (June 22, 2006), and can be purchased directly from the manufacturerer, CompuStitch. It can also be found at many cross-stitch specialty shops.

Just when you thought it was safe to go to the needlework shop there is a new tool that you may not be able to live without. What is the DoLolly you ask? It is from Mardina, the creators of the My Favorite Needle and Threader and it looks like it has a needle threader on one end (to run under the stitches you’re going to anchor the floss end) and a little hook on the other (so you can snag the floss and pull it through the threader). It looks like a nifty tool so it’s a must for me.

From CameoRoze :

A Dololly is a gizmo that has two ends ... the first looks like a needle threader ... only it's thicker and stronger. The other end is a little hook. You first pass the needle-threader-looking end under some stitches, then put it near the floss end. Pull the floss thorugh the hoop with the hook, and then pull the hoop thorugh the stitches.

Star De-Tailer Another handy gadget that is similar in function to a Dololly is the Star DeTailer. This item has a pretty little star as it's "handle" (where the dololly has a heart). The wire that you slip under the stitches is of a smaller guage, so works even better than the dololly for small count fabrics. The wire also has a "twist" on the looped tip. This is great for really holding on to the floss end before tucking it under the stitches. Another bonus ..... it costs only about 1/3 the price (about $5.00 US).

Of course, I have a special place in my heart for this gadget because an online friend of mine is the creator!
