Estaz

A question about this fiber arose on a cross-stitch listserve. I'd never heard of Estaz, so I looked in my EGA "fibers" book, and it was not listed. Then I went to the web. It seems this fiber is used in fly tying. Here's one description:

"Estaz is buggy stuff.. You can strap a hunk of it to a hook and catch trout with it all by itself. But when tied on that bent caddis hook, it looks to all the world like a fat, fuzzy, rolly-polly bug tumbling downstream."

It appears to be a core-wrapped mylar ... a nylon based strung chenille-like material covered with thin nylon barbs approximately a quarter-inch long. It comes in at least twelve popular colors including white, yellow, black, and chartreuse. (six dark colors, six light colors)

You can see some ties with this stuff here:

It appears to be manufacturered by Madiera, according to the Stitcher's Paradise website:

It's listed on the Madiera site under GlissenGloss: Metallic Thread & Braid

Does that help at all? I didn't read anything about how to use it.

As for the Estaz ... I did one of the ballerinas for DD#1 - turned out adorable. When I got to the skirt and the Estaz I decided that I wouldn't make myself crazy following the pattern - just couched it down in the general area deciding where to twist and turn it to make it look nice.

Estaz has been out for years. Marty Links Kidlinks "Prima Ballerinas" uses it all over the place. It makes the tutus really stand out. I found it at a fabric shop. My understanding is that it is used a lot like the whisper...and that you have to be gentle with it.

My LNS advises that if you are using something with BIG holes, you could stitch with very short lengths of it, but they prefer to recommend that you simply lay it on top of the fabric and couch it down. I'm using Aida-18, and certainly would not expect to be able to drag this stuff through even one hole without shredding it.

I finished the Kidlinks ballerina tonight. Since, like someone else on this list, I found it impossible to make the Estaz conform to the zigzags on the graph, I just made loops and tacked them down with the same pink floss I'd used for the leotard. She looks REALLY cute!
