Lashing |
|
Here's how I lash the sides of my fabric to my scroll frames. This lashing is not necessary, but it makes for a nice taught surface to stitch on.
I use a heavy sewing thread to do the lashing and put the stitches about an inch apart. But since I use just a simple overcast stitch that doesn't need to be precise, the lashing is a very quick procedure. I really love how taught the fabric is.
When it's time to scroll the frame to a "blank" part of the fabric, I snip the knot and un-lash the sides. Scroll the fabric. Then lash up again (often with the same piece of thread). I also put a soft cloth or paper towel over the stitches that I've completed before rolling to protect them from damage.
Here's some ascii art to show what it looks like ......

From: ThreadBndr Take some quilting thread or buttonhole twist (if canvas work/needlepoint) and lash the sides of the ground fabric to the side bars. Just secure your thread and come out of the fabric from the front, around the bar, back into the back of the fabric a half inch or so from where you came out. (A figure 8 type stitch also works very well.)
