If I really want to select the closest colors, I take my chart or picture and head for the nearest craft store...just go through the rows until it feels right.. lots of times I will combine several shades since skintones and hair color rarely are "solid"

From: Karen I think you could use the same method I did when I changed the color of a pink teddy bear to a brown bear. I found the main color (color used most) and then choose the main brown. Then I took the variations used in the shading (three of them) I stayed in the same color family and found three brown that varied in the same shade and difference form lightest to darkest.

From: Linda Kenner I was able to locate the Just Cross Stitch magazine that had the article regarding this. It is the April 1996 issue and the article deals with customizing your stitching. The article gives DMC numbers for skin tones but the suggestions regarding hair color are less specific. However, I believe the author does have some good suggestions.
