Needletatting is the original form of tatting. It is much easier to do than tatting with a shuttle IMO. I am a beginner but I do both. The only reason that shuttle tatting is the recognized form is because how popular the shuttles became. Shuttles were easy to decorate, carve, embed jewels in etc. During the Victorian era, the shuttles themselves became a status symbol. There is no difference in the finished result, just a slight variation in the process. Any tatting pattern can be done with either a needle or a shuttle. If you need anymore help, just let me know.
