You will not find how begin stitching the way I do in books. First, you thread the needle as shown in books. Then when I do the first stitch — do it very slowly — leaving a 1/2 tail on back of fabric, when the second stitch is made —stitch through the tail. When finishing stitching, I stitch through a few ribbons on back of the fabric.
I DO NOT use the knots as illustrustrated in silk ribbon books because they will create more bulk and this will show if this is to be framed. Plus they will not hold anyway. If the item is to be washed, a few stitches with sewing thread will keep the ribbon from coming loose.
To create a softer look of framing, I like to place batting (for quilting) behind the fabric. I prefer to buy the thicker batting and peal it in half. In our Brazilian Embroidery, we have to use knots and this will make the knots "hide" in the batting.

Books
Judith Baker Montano has pulled together an opulent collection of silk ribbons to twist, fold, stitch, knot, and manipulate into miniature masterpieces. In this book, Judith explains basic concepts with hints for design, fabric choices, and tips for embellishing clothing. She covers the tools of the trade and then presents a variety of projects by ten needle artists. All the embroidery stitches are illustrated clearly enough for a beginner. Ten projects, floral patterns, an international measurements table, and an extensive source guide.
Centuries old, the art of fashioning ribbon into beautiful flowers is presented with clear examples of exquisite ribbonwork. From bud to full bloom, from leaf tip to tendril twist, you'll marvel at the ease with which you learn to master this multifaceted art form. For ribbon lovers and flower lovers alike, this book overflows with stunning examples of vintage ribbonwork from museum and private collections. Savor an array of floral fantasies created with ribbons of shimmering silks with metallic threads and ruffled edges. Using new materials and vintage methods you will learn to make roses, pansies, fuchsias and stems, tendrils, berries, buds, and stamens, all from ribbons, wire, and crinoline.
