What is Hedebo Embroidery? Here's what I found out from the book:

Whilst hedebo is not a drawn ground embroidery, it [is similar] in the manner of working. In the earlier forms of hedebo embroidery the motifs were drawn, and the rest of the embroidery worked in surface stitchery. (In later forms, evenweave linen was frequently replaced by much more tightly woven linen, and patterns were achieved by cutting shapes and filling them with needle made laces.)

Hedebo embroidery is a traditional Danish craft, and was worked first on homespun and woven linen. The motif was transferred to the linen, the outlines worked in chain stitch, and all surface embroidery completed before the work was removed from the frame to cut the ground, working from the back of the material. The grounds were, for the most part, worked over a grid of two threads left and two drawn, either corded or lightly corded and woven, in much the same manner as that used for Russian drawn ground.
